‘Cats Run Away from Pride

WESTON, Mass - The Regis (Mass.) men's lacrosse team was outscored 6-1 in the first half on Saturday afternoon as the Pride suffered a 10-6 defeat to Anna Maria in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Stadium.

With the loss, the Pride falls to 3-7, 1-3 in the GNAC, on the season. The AMCats improve to 4-7 and 2-2 in conference play.

Goals from sophomores Brady Seymour (Chicopee, Mass) and Brandon Pavoni (Granby, Mass) gave the AMCATS the early edge just over four minutes into the contest, a score which would hold for almost an entire quarter of action. Three minutes into the second quarter, Pavoni woud tally his second goal of the day, and 27 seconds later sophomore Tyler Cheverier (Deep River, Conn) would add a goal of his own to give the visitors a 4-0 edge. Pride rookie Brent Young (Feeding Hills, Mass) finally got the Pride on the board at the 9:04 mark of the second quarter, but two more AMCAT goals sent the game to the half with a score of 6-1.

Anna Maria came out of the gate flying to start the second half, as Seymour and Ryan Rockwal (Chicopee, Mass) scored for the AMCATS in the third quarter's first 49 seconds, putting their team ahead 8-1. The Pride refused to go down quietly however, as AJ Karofsky (Barrington, R.I.) tallied a response before Danny Rancano (Miami, Fla) scored back-to-back man-up goals to cut the deficit to 8-4 with 6:28 remaining in the quarter. Anna Maria's Jacob Smith (Belchertown, Mass) and the Pride's Collin Spillane (Franklin, Mass.) traded goals in the final 3:01 of the quarter to send the game to the fourth with the Pride trailing 9-5.

The comeback just wasn't in the cards for the Pride on the day however, as the hosts could only muster a goal by freshman Michael Daras (Danvers, Mass) in the fourth quarter. Freshman Cameron Perry (Coventry, Conn.) sealed the deal for Anna Maria on a goal with 4:04, lifting the AMCATS s to a 10-6 victory.

Pavoni finished the day with the game's only hat trick, tallying three goals and an assist in the win. Perry, Seymour, and Rancano all had two goals for their respective teams, while Spillane finished with a goal and two assists for Regis.

The goalkeepers for both teams were on top of their games on the afternoon, led by Anna Maria's Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.), who made 19 saves in his team's victory. Nick Penta (Andover, Mass) took the loss for the Pride despite making 17 saves.

Regis will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when it makes the trip to Saint Joseph's (Me.) for a 6:00 p.m. faceoff. Anna Maria will look to run its win streak to three the same evening when it hosts Rivier at 7:00 p.m.
