North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Anna Maria College softball team dropped in a close battle with the Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic Institute by a final score of 6-5 on Monday, March 6th in their second game of the day at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in North, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The loss drops the AMCATS to 0-2 overall this season while the Wildcats improve to 2-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two and a half innings remained scoreless but the Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI from Leah Segerlin as she singled up the middle to score Lindsey Leone. The AMCATS responded quickly, tallying four runs in the top of the fourth inning starting off with a three-run triple by Kayla Magierowski (Spencer, Mass.) followed by a single from Hannah Trudo (Pomfrett Center, Conn.) that scored Magierowski from third (4-1).
The Wildcats closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Aliza Mathis singled to right center to score Corinna Laracuente. The fifth inning went by scoreless and an RBI from Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) in the top of the sixth gave the AMCATS a 5-2 lead.
It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth inning that the Wildcats stole the game with a four-run inning. All four runs were unearned. SUNY Polytechnic Institute took the final 6-5 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Anna Maria notched eight hits in the loss led by Magierowski going two-for-four at the plate with three RBIs. Lapierre and Trudo each added a hit and an RBI. Freshman Mackenzie Shurtleff added two hits on the day while Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.) and Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn.) tallied one hit each.
Ally Hamelin (Greenfield, Mass.) pitched a complete game giving up nine hits and six runs while just two of them were earned runs over six innings. She walked just one batter and recorded five strikeouts.
The AMCATS play Wentworth College on Tuesday, March 7th at 11:30 a.m. in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
