Sharks offense powers past AMCATS

BOSTON, Mass. The Sharks looked strong in their home opener, defeating Anna Maria 19-4 in non-conference action. Simmons allowed only 13 shots from the AMCATS, and improved to 1-1 on the season.

Simmons took control in the first half outshooting Anna Maria 22-9 on their way to building a comfortable 10-3 lead at the break. The second half saw more of the same from the Sharks who held Anna Marie to just one goal in the last 30 minutes as they glided to the 19-4 win. Simmons coach Amanda Maxwell was pleased with the way the Sharks defense came together in the mid-field to force turnovers from Anna Maria and maintain control.

Simmons dominated the draw control in both halves with junior Meaghan Maurice(Portland, Maine) winning five, junior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) and sophomoreMeg Coffey (Wilmot, N.H.) winning three, and sophomore Emily Kaley (Manchester, Maine) and freshman Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) tallying one win each.

Simmons's sophomore Rachel Wallace (Braintree, Mass.) set the tone with seven goals and one assist. She had help from juniors Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) andMeaghan Maurice (Portland, Maine) who scored three goals apiece. Freshman Leanne Luke (Newton, Mass.) and Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each added two goals and freshman Becca Shea (Quincy, Mass.) topped off the scoring with one goal. Luke and Shea each picked up assists on the game, Luke with two early on, and Shea with one in the second half.Sutherland led the Sharks in assists, tallying three of the game total eight.

Defensively, sophomore Meg Coffey (Wilmot, N.H.) controlled five ground balls, while sophomore Rachel Wallace (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) both controlled four. In goal, sophomore Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) posted eight saves for the Sharks.

Amanda Hevy recorded two goals for the AMCATS, while Katie Schebel and Alicia Savo picked up one goal each. Throughout the game Schebel was able to control four draws for Anna Maria. In goal, Fabienne Jules finished the day with eight saves for the AMCATS.

The Sharks will travel to Framingham State on Wednesday for a 4:00pm game while Anna Maria will return home to host Nichols at 6:00pm.
