The Lead: The Anna Maria College women's soccer team fell to the visiting Monks of Saint Joseph's College (Maine) 9-0 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
How It Happened:
-The Monks scored just under three minutes into the first half as Kendall Dolan (Kennebunk, Maine) was able to break through the AMCAT defense and put it behind goalkeeper, Gabriella Eldredge (West Boylston, Mass.) for the early 1-0 lead.
-The visitors extended their lead in the 19th minute of play as senior Lauren Stiles (Gorham, Maine) found junior Hayley DeGraca (Saco, Maine) who headed the ball into the net for the 2-0 lead. The Monks held on to the 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
-The Monks added seven more goals in the second half.
-Five minutes into the second half Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) found Emily Thornton (Westbrook, Maine) who put the ball past Eldredge for the 3-0 lead.
-The visitors posted back to back goals within just one minute of each other. Emily Deluca (Gorham, Maine) assisted on a goal by Peggy Balboni (Millis, Mass.) followed by an unassisted breakaway goal from Dolan to extend their lead to 5-0 with just under 36 minutes to play in the game.
-Five minutes later the Monks struck again as DeGraca netted her second goal of the game (6-0). Saint Joseph's didn't stop there and added three more goals to take the ultimate 9-0 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
-The Monks outshot the AMCATS 39 to one with 25 of those on goal.
-Dolan, DeGraca and DeLuca led the visitors with two goals each.
-Eldredge made 16 saves in the loss and falls to 0-3 on the season. Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made one save for the Monks and improves to 3-3 overall.
Anna Maria hosts Mass. Maritime on Tuesday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference match-up. The Monks host Southern Maine on Monday, September 18th starting at 6:00 p.m.
