Hennessey Represents Team Canada In 2025 U23 Ball Hockey World Championship
PAXTON, MA - From June 25th through the 29th, Anna Maria College Men's Ice Hockey goalie Matthew Hennessey represented Team Canada in the 2025 ISBHF U23 Ball Hockey World Championships in Hradec Kralove, Czechia.
For the last six years, Matthew Hennessey has been playing ball hockey for Team Saskatchewan as a way to stay active during the off-season. After playing in a National Tournament in Saskatoon last summer, Team Canada Ball Hockey reached out to Hennessey about playing on their team for the 2025 World Championship.
Hennessey tended the net in four games for Canada, helping the team win Silver in the Championship game against Czechia. While in net, Hennessey made 80 saves with an 89.89 SV% and a 3.03 GAA earning himself Best Goalie of the tournament. His best game of the trip came in a 6-0 win over Team USA where he stopped 28 shots to help push Canada to the Championship Game.
"Ball hockey is just kind of a past time for me. I never really thought I'd be able to represent my country in it, but when I got the call I was pretty pumped." Said Hennessey. "It was a great experience being able to check out different countries in Europe, but to be able to represent my country was an absolute honor. It didn't really set in until after our first game when we won and we got to listen to our national anthem while we were all standing on the blue line soaking it all in. It gave me goosebumps. We would've loved to have taken home gold, but regardless I made memories that I will be able to keep with me forever."
Matthew will be returning for his third season with the AMCATS after helping the team reach their most successful season in program history. The AMCATS finished with a record of 19-8 (Overall) and 14-4 (MASCAC), making it to the Conference Semifinals in their first season as members of the MASCAC. We look forward to seeing what Matthew and the rest of the Men's Ice Hockey team have in store for us this winter!
