FITCHBURG, Mass. - Anna Maria College swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Fitchburg State University on Tuesday afternoon at Riccards Field.
With the two wins, the AMCATS improve their conference record to 15-6 and 25-12 overall. The 25-win total is the highest in regular-season history for the AMCATS.
GAME ONE: Anna Maria 6, Fitchburg 4
Fitchburg State opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the third, but Anna Maria answered in the bottom of the fourth. Brayden Wright delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Josh Batchelder and tie the game at 1-1.
The Falcons regained the lead in the fifth before the AMCATS broke through with a five-run sixth inning. Jonathan Guardascione started the rally with a two-run double down the right field line to score Batchelder and Brady Aylward. Justin Chiulli followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Jeremiah Douglas, and Avery Acuna added a two-run double to right center, scoring Ryan Corcoran and Wright for a 6-2 advantage.
Fitchburg State scored twice in the seventh, but Anna Maria ultimately closed out the 6-4 victory.
Christopher Reardon earned his third win of the season, striking out five over 6.0 innings pitched.
GAME TWO: Anna Maria 6, Fitchburg State 2
Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, but the AMCATS responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. Andrew Denison reached on a bunt single and advanced to third on an error, allowing Avery Acuna and Justin Chiulli to score. Later in the inning, Mason Kolczewski brought home Denison with an RBI groundout, making it 3-1.
After the Falcons scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third, Anna Maria added three more in the fourth. Acuna singled to left to score Chiulli, before Kolczewski reached on an error that allowed Denison and Acuna to cross the plate for the final 6-2 margin.
Sean O'Hara earned his fourth win of the season, striking out two batters in 4.0 innings.
Anna Maria returns to action on Friday, May 1, when it hosts Bridgewater State at 4:00 p.m.
