Football Earns Sixth Straight Win With 45–35 Victory at Worcester State
WORCESTER, MA - Anna Maria College football continued its dominant run through the MASCAC, taking down Worcester State 45-35 on Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field. With the victory, the AMCATS improve to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play, tied for first with Plymouth State who they beat earlier this season.
The AMCATS' offense came out firing, fueled by another standout performance from freshman quarterback Nikolay Boyce, who completed 15 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing six times for 47 yards and a score to cap off a four-touchdown afternoon.
Anna Maria struck first when Boyce led an eight-play, 69-yard drive resulting in a touchdown pass to Anthony DaSilva to give the AMCATS an early 7-0 lead. The Lancers battled back with a touchdown and field goal to take a 10–7 lead before Boyce and tight end Tyler Garretson swung momentum with a big 71-yard score. A 23-yard field goal by Marino Vedova, who finished 6-for-6 on extra points, tied the game at 17 apiece, while a one-yard rushing TD by Boyce sent the AMCATS to the locker room ahead 24-20.
Boyce opened the second half with another long touchdown pass, this time connecting with Dashaun Ware, who ran 75 yards to the end zone to make it 31-20. After a Worcester State score, special teams delivered a major answer when Damari Yancey broke free for an 89-yard kickoff return touchdown, pushing the lead to 38-27. On the ground, Treshawn Blair powered in a late fourth-quarter touchdown, finishing with 41 rushing yards and a score.
Defensively, Anna Maria generated pressure all afternoon, recording four sacks, including 2.5 from Donovan Turner, who also posted six tackles. In the fourth quarter, Mar-Zhon Brinson delivered a pivotal interception and 25-yard return to halt a Worcester State push and help secure the victory. Jaiquan Torrence led all players with nine tackles, while Tyler Thibodeau and Derek Aguire added eight apiece.
Anna Maria will look to make it seven straight in a road game at Bridgewater State University next Saturday, November 8. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
