Women’s Volleyball Battles Elms in Five-Set Season Opener
PAXTON, MA - Anna Maria College was defeated in five sets by Elms College in a non-conference collegiate women's volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Full Activities Center. With the loss, the AMCATS open the season with a 0-1 record.
The home team came out strong, with a kill from Rilie Mendoza sparking a seven-point scoring run that gave the AMCATS an early 8-3 lead. Anna Maria maintained control for the rest of the set, adding a six-point run capped by an Alyssa Moore service ace, which forced an Elms timeout with the AMCATS ahead 22-15. A Blazers attack error sealed the set for the home team, putting Anna Maria up 1-0 in the match.
The AMCATS continued to dominate in the second set, coming back from an early 9-4 deficit to establish an 18-15 lead after a six-point scoring run emphasized by a service ace from Mendoza. Anna Maria kept the visitors at bay for the rest of the set, taking a 2-0 match lead thanks to another service ace from Ella Moon on the final point.
From there, Elms battled back, taking sets three and four to send the game to a fifth and final set. The final set was all Blazers as the visitors completed the comeback and took the match in five sets.
Vanessa Guimaraes paced the AMCATS offensively with 15 kills while adding eight digs. Moon and Emily Colp each had 14 digs, while Gia Hall contributed a game-high 27 assists and 12 digs.
Anna Maria returns to action on Wednesday, September 3rd, in a home matchup against Lesley, scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
