Men’s Basketball Storms Back From 25-Point Deficit to Win in Overtime
PAXTON, MA – Anna Maria College erased a 25-point deficit and completed a thrilling comeback, defeating Framingham State University 95–88 in overtime in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Fuller Activities Center.
With the win, the AMCATS improve to 5–12 overall and 2–5 in MASCAC play.
Trailing by as many as 25 points early in the second half and down 63–39 with just over seven minutes elapsed, Anna Maria ignited the comeback when John Witt buried a three-pointer to make it 63–42. Lucas Miglionico, Tyrell Green, and Logan Talbot followed with triples of their own during a 22–10 run that cut the deficit to 73–64 with just over five minutes remaining.
The AMCATS continued to apply relentless defensive pressure, holding the Rams to just 29 points in the second half. Another three from Witt, followed by a steal and a pair of free throws from Miglionico, made it 75–69 with under three minutes to play. After another defensive stop, Tyson Wheeler found Miglionico for a three-pointer to pull Anna Maria within three, forcing a Framingham State timeout with 1:32 left.
Wheeler stayed clutch down the stretch, knocking down a three-pointer of his own before Witt finished a fast-break layup to tie the game at 77–77 with 18 seconds remaining. The AMCATS then came up with a defensive stop to send the game into overtime after trailing by as many as 25 points in regulation.
Wheeler opened the extra period with a three-pointer, and Witt followed with another from beyond the arc to give Anna Maria an 85–81 lead with 1:23 left in overtime. Wheeler later added a key layup to keep the AMCATS ahead by four, forcing the Rams to foul down the stretch. Witt sealed the comeback with a steal and layup to put the game out of reach.
Five AMCATS scored in double figures, led by Miglionico's team-high 30 points. The sophomore guard knocked down three triples and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Witt finished with 16 points on 3-of-4 shooting from deep, while Talbot added 14 points, going a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. Wheeler and Green each chipped in 12 points, with Wheeler also dishing out six assists.
Jame McKinney delivered a breakout performance, impacting both ends of the floor with eight blocks, nine rebounds, four assists, and four points.
Anna Maria struggled offensively in the first half, shooting just 38.7 percent from the field. Miglionico, Talbot, and Green each scored seven points in the opening half, combining for 21 of the AMCATS' 31 points as they headed into the break trailing 48–31.
The AMCATS return to action on Saturday, January 31, when they host MASCAC opponent Salem State. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
