Men’s Basketball Falls Short Against Lancers

PAXTON, Mass. - Anna Maria College was defeated in overtime by Worcester State University 94-92 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Fuller Activities Center.

With the result, the AMCATS fall to 5-19 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

Ryan Otutlow provided an early spark for Anna Maria, shooting 5-for-6 from the field in the first half while posting a team-high 10 points and six rebounds. Otutlow's efficiency helped the AMCATS build a six-point advantage with 5:30 remaining in the opening half. Worcester State answered in the closing minutes, erasing the deficit to send the teams into halftime tied at 38-38.

The Lancers carried momentum into the second half and held a narrow lead for much of the period as Anna Maria remained within striking distance. Logan Talbot shifted the tide with an and-1 finish, converting the free throw to give the AMCATS a 58-56 edge with 10:30 left in regulation. The contest featured nine lead changes, with neither side able to create separation, and regulation ended in an 84-84 deadlock to force overtime.

Trailing by six with two minutes remaining in the extra session, Anna Maria mounted a final surge. Talbot scored to trim the deficit to four before Outlaw added a layup following a defensive stop. Alex Fournier delivered a key block that sparked a transition opportunity, leading to a game-tying layup by Lucas Miglionico with 26 seconds remaining to even the score at 92-92. Worcester State answered in the closing seconds to secure the 94-92 victory.

Miglionico led all players with 28 points and five rebounds. Outlaw recorded a double-double with 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds. Talbot added 14 points and four assists, while Tyson Wheeler contributed seven points and a game-high 10 assists.

Anna Maria concludes the regular season on the road against Framingham State University in a MASCAC matchup scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
