WORCESTER, MA - The Anna Maria College women's basketball team fell to Worcester State University, 72-50, in a non-conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Hurst Courts.
With the loss in the consolation round of the Worcester City Tournament, the AMCATS open the season with an overall record of 0-2.
Worcester State controlled the pace early, opening the game on a 21-11 first-quarter advantage before turning in a dominant defensive performance in the second, holding Anna Maria to just two points to take a 46–13 lead into the break.
The AMCATS came out of halftime re-energized, outscoring the Lancers 18-11 in the third quarter and continuing to battle in the fourth, where they posted 19 points to close out the afternoon.
Sophomore Arianna Gonzalez led the charge offensively, finishing with 15 points, five assists, two steals, and six boards. Senior Sarah O'Connor dominated the glass, hauling in 14 rebounds while adding seven points, three steals, and a block. Arianna Saladini chipped in seven points, while Bri Franklin provided a spark off the bench with five points and four rebounds. Defensively, graduate guard Tiffany Salazar was relentless, racking up a game-high six steals.
