Women’s Basketball Charges Past Colby-Sawyer

PAXTON, MA - Anna Maria College defeated Colby-Sawyer University 64-58 in a non-conference collegiate women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Fuller Activities Center.

With the victory, the AMCATS opened the new year with a win, improving to 4-6 overall as they prepare to begin MASCAC play.

After a tightly contested first quarter that saw the Chargers hold a narrow 18-17 edge, Anna Maria took control on the defensive end in the second quarter. The AMCATS limited Colby-Sawyer to just four points while scoring 21 of their own, fueled by an effective full-court press that generated nine team steals. Sarah O'Connor led the defensive effort with four steals in the first half. Arianna Gonzalez and Meaghan Doyle paced the offense, each scoring 10 points, as Anna Maria carried a 38-22 lead into halftime.

The Chargers clawed their way back into the game, outscoring the AMCATS 36-26 in the second half and at one point cutting the Anna Maria lead to just three. However, the early cushion proved enough, as the AMCATS held on to secure their third win in four games.

Doyle led Anna Maria with 19 points, adding six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Gonzalez followed with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. O'Connor grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds while also contributing four steals and two blocks.

Anna Maria will open conference play on the road at Salem State on January 7, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m.
