Women’s Basketball Sinks Mitchell

PAXTON, MA – Anna Maria College defeated Mitchell College 66-59 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Fuller Activities Center.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 3-5 overall before entering conference play.

After a red-hot first quarter from behind the three-point line for the Mariners, the AMCATS' defense locked in, allowing just six points in the second. Anna Maria outscored Mitchell 16-6 in the frame, with a three-pointer from Arianna Gonzalez capping off a 9-2 run to give the AMCATS a 30-25 lead heading into halftime.

Anna Maria kept the pressure on in the third quarter, with back-to-back fast-break layups from Meaghan Doyle putting the home team up 44-36 and forcing a Mitchell timeout with just under three minutes remaining.

The fourth quarter followed suit, as the AMCATS converted a nice play from Sarah O'Connor to Hannah Baxter, who knocked down a jumper to establish a 62-51 lead and trigger another Mitchell timeout. From there, the AMCATS controlled the remainder of the game to close out the win.

Baxter led the AMCATS with 15 points and seven rebounds in just 12 minutes of action, going 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Tiffany Salazar added a spark off the bench with 12 points and six rebounds, while O'Connor secured the double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, adding two assists, two steals, and two blocks to her stat line.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday, December 13, for a home game against New England College beginning at noon.
