Women's Basketball Picks Up First Win of the Season Over Purchase

PAXTON, MA - Anna Maria College picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating Purchase College 80-61 in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Fuller Activities Center.

With the victory, the AMCATS improve to 1-3 to open the year.

After finishing the opening quarter deadlocked at 14-14, the AMCATS put together their strongest 10 minutes of the season, outscoring the Panthers 25-15 in the second quarter. Anna Maria knocked down four three-pointers in the period, with Arianna Gonzalez leading the surge. Gonzalez scored 12 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting, including two threes, while adding a pair of steals. Sarah O'Connor was another impact player in the first, dropping 10 points and capping the half with a three-pointer to send the AMCATS into the break ahead 39-29.

Anna Maria kept rolling in the third, posting 27 points, its most in any quarter this season. Meaghan Doyle took over, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, hitting two threes, and scoring 10 points in the third quarter alone as the AMCATS built a commanding 28-point lead. That cushion proved more than enough to withstand a shaky fourth quarter, as Anna Maria closed out a comfortable 19-point victory.

O'Connor finished with a dominant double-double, leading all players with 21 points and 16 rebounds while also adding four steals. Gonzalez followed with 19 points and six steals, and Doyle finished with 10. In total, nine AMCATS scored throughout the game

Anna Maria now heads into the Thanksgiving break before returning to the court on Wednesday, December 3, for a road matchup at Lasell University.
