Women’s Basketball Takes Down Salem State

PAXTON, Mass. – Anna Maria College erased a 10-point first-half deficit to defeat Salem State University, 71-59, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Fuller Activities Center.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 6-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

After a slow offensive start from both teams, Anna Maria trailed 24-20 at halftime. The AMCATS offense came alive in the third quarter behind Hannah Baxter, who scored 11 of the team's 25 points in the period. Baxter went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the quarter, helping Anna Maria take a 45-40 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The AMCATS continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vikings 26-19 and building a lead that grew to as many as 17 points. Arianna Gonzalez led the charge in the final frame, scoring 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers. As a team, Anna Maria shot 5-for-8 from beyond the arc in the quarter.

Baxter finished with a team and career-high 21 points, grabbing nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Gonzalez added 18 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds, coming just short of a triple-double.

Anna Maria returns to action on Wednesday, February 4, when it travels to MCLA for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
