Women’s Basketball Outlasts Lancers
PAXTON, Mass. - Anna Maria College defeated Worcester State University 55-53 in a closely contested Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday evening at the Fuller Activities Center.
With the result, the AMCATS improve to 10-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
After trailing by seven in the opening half, Anna Maria responded with a decisive 10-0 run in the second quarter to seize control. Arianna Gonzalez powered the surge with 11 first-half points, while Tiffany Salazar added eight, helping the AMCATS carry a 30-28 advantage into the halftime break.
The back-and-forth battle continued throughout the third quarter, with Anna Maria holding a slim 38-36 lead entering the final frame. Worcester State briefly regained momentum early in the fourth, but a timely steal by Sarah O'Connor led to a fast-break basket from Meaghan Doyle, sparking a 9-2 run that put the AMCATS back in front, 51-50, with just over two minutes remaining.
From there, the AMCATS tightened defensively. Kimani Wilburn anchored the pressure with five steals on the night, as Anna Maria limited the Lancers to just three points over the final two minutes to secure the victory.
Gonzalez delivered a game-high 19 points, adding seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Salazar finished with 11 points and three steals, while Doyle contributed 10 points. O'Connor recorded a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points, five steals, and three assists.
Anna Maria closes out the regular season on the road against Framingham State University in a MASCAC matchup scheduled for noon on Saturday, January 21.
