Softball Held Off By Blue Jays On The Road
WEST HARTFORD, CT – On Thursday, April 17th, the Anna Maria College softball team traveled to Connecticut for a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) Blue Jays. The AMCATS lost both games 8-0 and 5-0.
Game One:
Anna Maria came out looking to set the tone early. In the top of the first, Kaitlyn Hicks reached base with a clean single to right-center, giving the AMCATS early hope. However, the offense stalled as Saint Joseph's defense quickly closed the inning and took control of the game.
The home team responded immediately in the bottom half of the first, scoring an unearned run after taking advantage of a defensive miscue. That run opened the door for a strong offensive push in the following innings. A tough second inning saw the Blue Jays put up four runs, followed by two more in the third and one in the fourth, creating a lead that the AMCATS were unable to overcome.
Defensively, Anna Maria battled to stay in the game, making some strong plays in the infield and showing flashes of good positioning. Despite that, Saint Joseph kept the pressure on with consistent contact at the plate and smart base running. The AMCATS, meanwhile, struggled to generate offense after the first inning, finishing the game with just one hit and leaving one runner on base.
Game Two:
The early innings of the matchup were marked by strong defensive play from both teams. Anna Maria held the home team scoreless through three innings, with starting pitcher Lauryn Meade working efficiently from the circle and keeping the opposing lineup off balance. Meade went the full six innings, allowing just seven hits and four earned runs while striking out four.
The AMCATS offense was led by Ella Moon, who delivered two hits on the day, including a double. Madison Levesque and Emelia Carvalho also added hits, helping keep the energy high in the dugout. Hicks reached base and later moved into scoring position, while the team executed three sacrifice plays to apply pressure when opportunities arose.
The home team broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, bringing in a run on a single after a runner had reached on an error. A late four-run sixth inning, fueled by a string of base hits and aggressive base running, widened the gap and ultimately sealed the final score.
WHAT'S NEXT
Anna Maria will be back on the field on Friday, April 18th, for another GNAC matchup, this time on the road against Lasell University. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM EDT as the AMCATS look to bounce back and bring the energy into a new day of competition.
