Softball Splits Doubleheader With Framingham, Doyle Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Anna Maria College split a doubleheader in its Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against Framingham State University on Saturday afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the split, the AMCATS move to 8-8 overall and 1-1 in MASCAC play.

GAME ONE: Anna Maria 5, Framingham State 4

Trailing 4-1 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, the AMCATS delivered in dramatic fashion. Meaghan Doyle stepped to the plate and launched a walk-off grand slam over the left field fence to secure the 5-4 victory.

Anna Maria got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Doyle came around to score on an errant throw by the catcher, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Makenna Lovelette earned her fifth win of the season with a complete game performance, striking out five in the circle.

GAME TWO: Framingham State 6, Anna Maria 5

Game two proved just as tightly contested. Framingham State opened the scoring with three runs in the third, but the AMCATS answered in the bottom half of the inning when Emelia Carvalho came home on a single from Ella Moon, before Doyle brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. Madisyn Crossman followed with an RBI single to even the score at 3-3.

After the Rams regained a 4-3 edge in the fifth, Angela Marie Gilmartin responded with an RBI groundout to tie the game once again at 4-4.

Framingham State pulled ahead with two runs later in the game to take a 6-4 lead into the seventh. Anna Maria attempted another late comeback, plating a run on an error to cut the deficit to 6-5, but ultimately fell just short.

Lovelette once again saw the bulk of the work in the circle, pitching in both games and throwing 6.2 innings in game two while adding six strikeouts.

Anna Maria returns to action on Friday, April 3, for a non-conference doubleheader against Maine Presque Isle beginning at 3:00 PM.
