Softball Hits Seven Home Runs in Sweep Over NEC
PAXTON, Mass. - Anna Maria College swept New England College in a non-conference collegiate softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the AMCAT Softball Field. The AMCATS combined for seven home runs across the two games.
With the two wins, Anna Maria improves to 13-17 overall, remaining 2-8 in MASCAC play.
GAME ONE: Anna Maria 9, NEC 5
Anna Maria powered its way to the opener behind five home runs, accounting for seven of the team's nine RBIs.
Ella Moon started the scoring in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, her second of the year, to give the AMCATS a 1-0 lead.
New England College answered with five runs across the second and third innings to move in front 5-1, but Angela Marie Gilmartin responded in the bottom of the fourth with her first career home run, a two-run shot that cut the deficit to 5-3.
The AMCATS took control in the bottom of the fifth. Moon blasted her second home run of the game, a two-run shot, before Mae McGowan and Meaghan Doyle hit back-to-back solo home runs to put Anna Maria in front 7-5.
Anna Maria added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Madison Levesque tripled to right field to drive in a run, and Emelia Carvalho brought home another with a sacrifice fly to make it 9-5.
Moon led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Makenna Lovelette earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings with four strikeouts while allowing four earned runs.
GAME TWO: Anna Maria 8, NEC 7
After New England College grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Anna Maria answered with four runs in the bottom of the second. Madisyn Crossman delivered a two-run double to put the AMCATS ahead 2-1. Carvalho later reached on a single, with a throwing error allowing another run to score, before Moon added an RBI double to cap the inning and give Anna Maria a 4-1 advantage.
McGowan stayed hot in game two, leading off the fourth with a solo home run, her second of the day, to extend the lead to 5-2.
After the Pilgrims cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fifth, Doyle launched a two-run home run, her seventh of the season, to push the AMCATS back in front 7-4.
New England College rallied in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 7-7, but Anna Maria answered in the bottom half. Moon and Paige Stewart opened the inning with singles before Doyle delivered a walkoff single to secure the sweep.
Mackenzie Evers pitched all seven innings and earned the win for the AMCATS.
Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday, April 25, at Worcester State for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
