Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader Against UMPI

PAXTON, Mass. - Anna Maria College softball split a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday afternoon at AMCAT Softball Field.

GAME ONE: UMPI 8, Anna Maria 4

After allowing three runs in the top of the first, Anna Maria responded with four in the bottom half. Meaghan Doyle drove in Ella Moon with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Angela Marie Gilmartin that scored Paige Stewart. Doyle later crossed home on a wild pitch, and Madisyn Crossman added a sacrifice fly to give the AMCATS a 4-3 lead.

UMPI answered with runs in the second, third, and sixth innings to take an 8-4 lead, holding on for the win. Makenna Lovelette pitched a complete game for Anna Maria, recording five strikeouts while allowing six earned runs.

GAME TWO: Anna Maria 8, UMPI 4

After giving up two runs in the top of the third, the AMCATS responded with three in the bottom half. Paige Stewart scored on an error, Madison Levesque followed with a single to drive in another run, and Mae McGowan doubled to center field to give Anna Maria a 3-2 lead.

The AMCATS added to their advantage in the fourth, with Meaghan Doyle launching a two-run home run to extend the lead to 5-2. UMPI hit a solo home run in the fifth, but Anna Maria broke the game open in the bottom half. An RBI groundout from Ella Moon, a run scored on an error, and an Angela Marie Gilmartin single to right-center pushed the lead to 8-3.

McKenzie Evers pitched a complete game for Anna Maria, striking out three batters while allowing just one earned run.

Doyle was the player of the day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game one, then following that with a 3-for-3 performance in game two, including a two-run homer, two runs scored, and a walk.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday, April 4, with a home doubleheader against Mass. Maritime, beginning at noon.
