MEN'S HOCKEY DOMINATES WESTFIELD STATE IN MASCAC QUARTERFINAL

AUBURN, MA– The Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team put on a commanding performance in the MASCAC Quarterfinals, defeating #7 Westfield State 8-2 at Horgan Ice Rink on Febuary 27th. The AMCATS set the tone early, scoring three goals in the first period and never looking back as they secured a decisive victory to advance to the semifinals.

Anna Maria came out firing on all cylinders, controlling possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities. The AMCATS struck first when Matthew Gilbert found the back of the net just under five minutes into the game, assisted by Max Wennerberg and Owen Barrow. Shortly after, Brandon Della Paolera extended the lead with two quick goals, assisted by Pearce Baker and Derek Raposo, sending Anna Maria into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

Westfield State responded early in the second period, cutting the deficit to 3-1 on a goal by Christopher Miraldo. However, Anna Maria quickly answered back with a goal from Matthew Byrne, set up by Guillaume Coulombe and Brandon Della Paolera, to restore the AMCATS' advantage. Westfield State attempted to rally once more, but their efforts were thwarted by a relentless Anna Maria defense and strong goaltending from Matthew Hennessey.

As the second period progressed, Anna Maria continued to dictate the pace of play, extending their lead with another goal from Gilbert, assisted by Samson Mouland and Owen Barrow. Despite Westfield State managing to score once more, the AMCATS held firm and entered the final period with a commanding 5-2 lead.

 Anna Maria closed out the game with a dominant third period, shutting down Westfield State's offense while adding three more goals of their own. Matthew Byrne capitalized on a great setup from Coulombe, Liam Wells found the net to add further insurance, and Max Wennerberg sealed the deal with a final tally. Goaltender Matthew Hennessey played a crucial role in keeping Westfield State at bay, finishing the game with 21 saves on 23 shots faced.

With a complete team effort, the AMCATS punched their ticket to the MASCAC Semifinals, proving themselves as a formidable contender in the conference playoffs.

Beyond the Box Score:

 - Brandon Della Paolera was a standout performer, registering two goals and an assist while leading the team with 10 shots on goal. His offensive presence was a key factor in Anna Maria's dominant showing.

 - Matthew Gilbert delivered another impressive performance, scoring twice and adding an assist. His ability to find space and capitalize on scoring chances played a crucial role in the AMCATS' offensive success.

 - Matthew Byrne contributed significantly with two goals, showcasing his finishing ability and helping solidify Anna Maria's victory with strong play in the offensive zone.
