Men’s Ice Hockey Wipes Out Wildcats

PROVIDENCE, RI - Anna Maria College returned to the win column after an extended break, defeating Johnson & Wales University 3-1 in a non-conference collegiate men's ice hockey game on Friday night at Lynch Arena.

With the victory, the AMCATS improved to 8-4 overall, earning their second straight win and their sixth in the last eight games. Anna Maria remains near the top of the MASCAC standings at 4-1.

After a scoreless opening period for the first 19 minutes, Liam Wells broke the deadlock with 47 seconds remaining, netting his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Braeden McKinnon.

The teams continued to battle in the second period, with JWU tying the game at 1-1 with 4:40 remaining. The tie was short-lived, as Max Wennerberg answered just over a minute later with his second goal of the season to restore the AMCATS' lead. Christopher Friberg picked up the assist on the go-ahead goal.

From there, Anna Maria held strong defensively, keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard in the third period. Wennerberg added an insurance goal with under three minutes remaining in regulation, his second of the night, assisted by Owen Barrow, to secure the 3-1 victory.

Matthew Hennessey played the full 60 minutes in goal for the AMCATS, making 22 saves to earn his eighth win of the season. Anna Maria dominated the game offensively, firing off 76 shots with 33 on goal, compared to 42 shots and 20 on goal for JWU.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday, January 9th, for a home matchup against Manhattanville. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
